Yesterday I sat at the kitchen table with Gabriel.
A fly buzzed in from the living room, and Gabe pounced out of his chair towards it, grabbing the flyswatter on his way to window.
As the fly buzzed and bounced around, repeatedly whacking itself on the glass barricade, Gabe tried to smack him dead.
"Gabe!" I said. "You don't have to kill it! It's not even a bee that might sting you. It's a house fly for pete's sake. And it's just trying to get back outside! He's trapped and scared. Imagine if you accidently went into someone's house and they decided to kill you for being there!"
So my sweet son caught the fly in his hands, carried him to the door and released him into the fresh air.
I praised his gentleness. "Gabe! I love that you love animals! Even the flies are God's creatures, you know."
Gabe was quiet for a long moment.
Then he replied...
"I eat God's creatures."
And by golly, he does. :)

What's a Mom to say to that?
