The Field Trip

So, a few weeks ago, we got a field trip form. Gabe's class of grade 5/6 was going skating. They needed parents to walk to and from the rec center, parents to drive all of the skates over, and parents to help supervise hockey on the ice.

I said yes, I could do any of those (except the hockey!! Lol- sporty spice I am not!)

Yesterday was d-day, and I woke up wondering what I'd gotten myself into.

I was shocked to see that I was the only parent there. There was a couple who dropped off the skates, but I was the only one willing to walk. I was the only one on the ice.

I got to tell the kids to get back on the sidewalk.

To hurry up.

To keep their hands to themselves.

I got to step on the dental floss 'tail' that one little boy was dragging behind him all the way.

I got to meet a kid named Jagger, which is the coolest name ever.

I got to hear my son say "Come on, Mom! Let's go!!"

I got to be the proud Auntie of the best fort builder in the world, my nephew Edward. (click here to see his fort)

I got to sing to Caden, and have him laugh about it.

I got to encourage an incredible but tired and very overwhelmed teacher.

I got to hear the kids in the class recite me the book I'd written and read to them weeks ago in their class, almost verbatim. And they were loving it!

I got to tie skates for some little girls that needed a smile.

I got to skate with a 'new' skater, and make her laugh, and tell her I was so proud of her for being out there.

It might have been crazy, noisy, cold, and overwhelming, but....

I'm so glad I checked 'yes' on that form.

I'm SO glad you did too! You're the Mama that I would want standing in for me.

Lovin' the positive attitude!! I love those little critters too. When I spend time at the school or on field trips I am (usually) not sorry I said "yes". Fun times!!

Good For you Charlaine.
I remember helping out at the school, when my kids where in school too. It (to me) meant a lot to be able to be there, and help out. I am sure there is probably going to be a time or two that I can once again help out,at the school ,but this time it will be for the grandkids. (Evan goes to kindergarten, at the school right next door to my place.) A few more years and Holden will going there too.) It is a feeling that brings joy to ones heart.

love you and keep up the good work. love Auntie Marilyn
